ICGP EPA has been developed as part of a shift to a competency-based medical education (CBME) approach to postgraduate specialist training in General Practice in Ireland.

Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) are discrete units of professional practice that can be fully entrusted to an individual once they have demonstrated the necessary competence to execute them unsupervised. The Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) has developed 18 EPAs that focus on the authentic tasks that Irish General Practitioners (GPs) do as daily work. The ICGP EPA tool allows for documentation of meaningful ongoing formative assessment to enhance the learning of GP trainees on the National Specialist Training Programme in General Practice and provides data to help inform summative assessments.

Depending on the situation, one of three separate EPA tools can be used:

1. PIP-C - for assessment of an observed consultation.
2. PIP-P - for assessment of an observed procedure or physical exam.
3. Case Based Discussion (CBD) - for providing feedback on a case-based discussion between a supervisor and trainee.

The PIP-C and CBD tools incorporate entrustment decisions based on the WONCA domains of competence. The PIP-P tool incorporates entrustment decisions based on separate domains of competence. Use of the ICGP EPA electronic tool is trainee-led, with the clinical supervisor confirming the trainee’s record of the event and providing documented formative feedback. Each ICGP EPA assessment should take no longer than 2-3 minutes to complete. Further information about ICGP EPAs is available here www.icgp.ie/epainfo
